Developmental Grieving

Monday December 6, 2004
My mother died mid-June in 1992. From Mother's Day through the anniversary of her death I grieve. For many years I didn't recognize the reason for my sadness; I just knew that I was sad. My husband was the one who finally identified the developmental grieving, or grief that is triggered by memories, I was experiencing when he asked one Sunday afternoon if my sadness was about my mother.

The holiday season is upon us and with all the sights, sounds, and smells of the season; memories may be triggered. Be prepared for the holiday sadness your foster or adopted child or perhaps yourself may be facing.
