What Foster Care is All About

Wednesday May 25, 2005
Today we attended a celebration for a past foster daughter who is graduating from high school. She is also leaving Tuesday for the Air Force. She and her sister came to our home when they were 12 and 9 years old. We had them for 9 months.
I was very touched when their mother extended an invitation for us to come to the party and also included my parents. We've all stayed as close as possible through cards, letters, and birthday parties.
When we joined the graduation party, the children's mother introduced us as extended family. I couldn’t help but smile proudly.
The child's step father then said that almost everyone in the room has had a hand in helping to raise the now 18 year old.

This is what doing foster care is all about - it's not only about preserving families but also creating larger families who all care for the same child/ren.
I love how we've added to our family through foster care. I hope we can add more children and their parents through our future foster care efforts.
If you are unable to foster there are several other ways to help.
