About Adoption: Remembering Mom

Monday June 27, 2005
Friday I attended one of our local Relay for Life events. It's a new thing for me - being involved with anything that has to do with cancer since my mother died of cancer back in June of 1992. Doing Relay for Life has been good for me. This is my second year attending and my first year being involved with the team planning of events and decorations. We had a very good time. While walking around the track I searched for the luminary that I knew had been purchased in my mother's memory. I found the white sack with my mother's name written in black marker under the words "In Memory" and under her name was listed who had purchased the luminary. It was the adoptive mother of her first child. Yes, my mother had placed a child for adoption. My mother missed seeing all of her daughters reunited by three years. I thought it was a sweet thing for my sister's adoptive mother to do. I also thought about the fact that my mother would never have guessed that one day the lady who had adopted her child would do something to honor her memory.
If you are considering placing a child - learn about your options first. I know that my mother weighed her options heavily before deciding to place.
