Adoption News - Anti-adoption culture alarming: inquiry
Monday November 28, 2005
A parliamentary committee has found that over the last 35 years, adoption of Australian children by Australians have dropped from over 9,000 to less than 100 a year. Many are going over seas to adopt. The committee has found that this is due to anti-adoption beliefs held by those in government handling the adoption applications. The committee chairman was surprised to hear that there are those who do not support adoption. Due to this lack of support over the past 35 years, thousands of children wait in foster homes and out of home care facilities. The committee is now trying to make changes to the system to increase the number of in country adoptions.
