From the Inbox: What Is an Adoption Subsidy?

Tuesday November 29, 2005
"My Brother has given up all rights to his 2 young boys, my mom has had legal guardianship for approximately 1 ½ years. She receives money on a monthly basis for the boys which helps because without this she would not be able to care for them, this same office is telling her that she still will receive this money even though she is adopting them, is this true? I find it hard to believe because from what I understand is that when you adopt they are yours and you take full legal and financial responsibility for the children, correct or not?"
My answer: Yes, a child may still receive assistance after adoption. It all depends on the state's guidelines and if the child meets those adoption subsidy guidelines.
