Foster Care - Hurry Up and Wait

Monday April 24, 2006
Well, the placement we were going to get last week fell through - so did another placement a few days later. (I will tell more about this later.) This is the life of a foster parent. You really don't know what's going to happen until the last minute and one of my mother's favorite expressions, "hurry up and wait," applies nicely to fostering. But, we did get our first police protective custody (PPC) placement yesterday after church. PPC children are those that are picked up by the police, if while making an arrest or performing a welfare check, the officers feel that the children are not living in a healthy environment. The children then wait in foster homes for 72 hours while social workers investigate and make a decision to either send the children home with services or enter them into the foster care system. I don't know if all states do PPC's in the same manner. The two we have now are 2 years and 7 months. We haven’t had a baby for almost 9 years! Good thing we went out this weekend and picked up some supplies. The following resources on About have been very helpful to me over the past few days.
  • Bare Necessities: Basic Baby Needs
  • How To Buy and Store Powdered Baby Formula
  • Before You Buy a Baby Car Seat
  • New Baby Daily Logs
  • Baby Food Stages and Steps
