Preparing to Parent the Internationally Adopted Child

Thursday January 3, 2008

Whenever I search for news articles that I find interesting enough to post in our adoption newsroom I find a ton of those, "we're so happy that we've adopted from here or there" stories. And, that's great. Really. Those stories are so uplifting to all of the pre-adoptive families still waiting.

But, it got me to consider the following point: Did the new family think to prepare to parent? This lack of planning in regards to parenting actually reminds me of another joyous occasion – weddings. So many young couples spend so much time planning their weddings that they forget to plan their marriages. It just doesn’t all end with the trip down the aisle. It’s the same with adoption; it doesn't end with the trip home.

So what would you recommend to pre-adoptive families when it comes to preparing to parent an internationally adopted child?
