Adoption Relationships: A Triangle or a Plane?

Wednesday February 6, 2008

I was one of three girls growing up and I can tell you that having an odd number of siblings can be difficult. I also know how difficult it can be when my children try to pull me into a triangulation with other adults. Triangle relationships are not the best, so why is it that that is how we describe adoption relationships - with a triangle. We speak of the adoption triad to describe the parties involved - adoptee, adoptive parent, and birth parent. But a triad or triangle doesn't really work in relationships.

Dan and Chris, adoptees, have explored this idea with their essay, Adoption Relationships: A Triangle or a Plane? and describe adoption relationships in a new and interesting way.

Where are you in the adoption plane and which one best describes your relationship? Click "comments" below and share.
