Adoption Book Review: Risk and Promise: a Handbook for Parents Adopting a Child from Overseas
Monday February 11, 2008
Risk and Promise: a Handbook for Parents Adopting a Child from Overseas takes the information that usually comes in adoption referrals and teaches prospective adoptive parents how to interpret that information and make an informed decision on adoption. Risk and Promise: a Handbook for Parents Adopting a Child from Overseas explains the different disorders and risk factors that afflict waiting children and what needs the children may have in their new homes.
When I received this new adoption book, Risk and Promise: a Handbook for Parents Adopting a Child from Overseas, I didn't think that the material would apply to my children as we adopted domestically through foster care. I was pleasantly surprised. I could see my adopted children’s behavior in the different sections discussed as well as different foster children we have served over the years. I found that the information provided in this new adoption book helped me to better understand my children and I adopted in 2002. So, I don't think that Risk and Promise: a Handbook for Parents Adopting a Child from Overseas is just pertinent to those interested in adopting internationally. Some issues remain the same no matter where a child is born. I would recommend this book to any adoptive family.
