Maybe a Crown Can Change Minds on Open Adoptions

Wednesday June 18, 2008

In case you haven't heard, the new Miss Oklahoma, Kelsey Cartwright, 20, has chosen her platform for her 2008 reign. It is open adoptions. The need for open adoptions is a subject close to her heart as her father, William Cartwright, is adopted and went through many trials within the Oklahoma legal system in the attempt to find information on his birth family.

In a recent interview Kelsey described the roadblocks and trails of paperwork her father had to go through in order to find answers. It took years, but he was finally successful and she noted that the amount of respect and pride that he had within himself increased. "They revealed that he is part American Indian and part Hispanic and that his real last name is Mendoza."

Cartwright will begin making personal appearances in September and that is when she will start delivering her message on open adoptions.

So, what do you think? Will her reign make a difference in public opinion? I think any positive exposure is a good thing.

Highlighting the need/right of adoptees to their OBC and adoption file would be very good. I just hope she doesn’t try to advocate for adoption as well.
