New Adoption Poem - What I Am

By September 11, 2008

Follow me on:

I was very excited to read this adoption poem submission when it first appeared in my email. Lisa Myers has written a couple of adoption poems that are featured here on About Adoption & Foster Care, and she is one of the few adoptees to submit adoption poetry. Hint: I would love to receive more adoption poems from adoptees.

In this poem Lisa writes about how it's "etched on her skin," speaking of her 'Chosen Child' tattoo. That reminded me of how my sisters and I, after our adoption reunion, wanted to go out and do something to show our connection. We talked about piercing our ears a second time (or third time for some) and wearing a special 'sister' earring. Since some of the sisters were total sissies about piercing ears, a tattoo would have been out of the question. Note: I was not one of the sissies.

It just seemed that we wanted others to see our connection. Maybe because we didn't have a shared history? Interesting that what we were considering involved blood. Just thinking.

What a great poem! I love it. Thanks so much for sharing.

Connection is very important, especially if you’ve been adopted. It’s great that she wrote that wonderful poem.
