Walk Me Home...to the Place I Belong
Many major organizations have a signature event and now foster care does too, Walk Me Home. This event didn't start off with a little shin ding either, but with a whole shebang! Most events start locally, before growing regionally and then nationally. Not, Walk Me Home, it grew nationwide its first year out, in 2008.
It's going strong in 2009, maybe even stronger. There is an official theme song of Walk Me Home...to the place I belong. This song was written for the National Foster Parent Association and its signature special event by Jaime Fox, Si Hill and Bruce Wallace and is performed by Jaime Fox.
The goals for this walking campaign are really threefold, very simple, but very needed as there are over 513,000 children in foster care in the United States.
- Raise awareness for foster care, its challenges and the positive side of foster parenting.
- Develop a positive vehicle for recruitment and retention of foster parents.
- Raise much needed funds for awareness, advocacy, education and support for foster families nationwide.
So grab your family, friends and neighbors and create a team. It's easy to do and a lot of fun. What a great way to help kids in foster care.
The "walking season" of major walking events such as this is between May and October, so there is plenty of time to get an event organized in your area. If not, go for a "virtual team."
Will you be giving this event a try this year?
