Hollywood Adoption Updates

Tuesday September 15, 2009

Elton John Denied It appears that adoption rules do apply across the board and includes celebrities like Elton John. Elton John and his longtime partner David Furnish, who married in 2005, in one of the first civil unions in the United Kingdom, were denied the opportunity to adopt a 14-month old Ukrainian child, Lev. According to Ukrainian adoption guidelines a prospective adoptive parent must be no more than 45 years older than the adopted child, Elton John is 62. The Ukraine also does not allow single parent adoptions. According to the country's Family, Youth and Sports Minister Yuriy Pavlenko, the Ukraine does not recognize homosexual unions as marriage. Lev is HIV positive and the couple met the child while touring the eastern Ukraine as part of a charity project. The country hopes that Elton's interest in little Lev will spur more interest in the adoption of HIV positive children.
