Nia Vardalos Is the 2009 National Adoption Day Spokesperson

Thursday October 1, 2009

The National Adoption Day Coalition recently announced that the Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated writer and actress, Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding is the 2009 National Adoption Day spokesperson.

Just last year during the 2008 National Adoption Month, Nia Vardalos and her husband, Ian Gomez went public with the adoption of a little girl from the United States foster care system.

"My goal is to raise awareness about foster family agencies who can connect prospective parents with the 129,000 legally free children waiting for a family," Vardalos said. "I am pleased to spread the message that American foster care, while maintaining the highest level of screening, does not discriminate against applicants for reasons of income level, marital status or sexual orientation."

What a great celebrity advocate, someone who has actually adopted from foster care. With Vardalos as the spokesperson for National Adoption Day and Sid the Sloth doing Ad Council advertisement about foster care adoption - I think we're all set for getting the word out this November during National Adoption Month.

Legally free children? OMG…and they made her a spokesperson?

I’m am so sick of us (adoptees) being treated like commodities.

It’s clear that there is confusion on what “legally free” means. Commodities? No. The term has nothing to do with the price of a child!

It is awesome that a celebrity chose to not just adopt from the United States, but to adopt from the foster care system. A child that was not an infant – but about 4 years old as I understand….in foster care years – she was pushing the envelope and heading toward “old age” in adoption years. Unfortunately – many people choose to adopt 2 and under.

I am 62 years old and in 1952 my four brothers and I became wards of the State of Texas. This month my book was released about my life before and after being adopted. It includes all the paperwork from the State of Texas from the day we were picked up until we were adopted. Please forward my message to Nia Valdalos I believe she would enjoy reading it. “ADOPT IS A POWERFUL WORD”.
