It's no fairy tale when adoptee discovers she's princess

Wednesday September 20, 2006

When I was in the 8th grade our class was learning about genealogy. I so wanted to have a famous relative like my classmate with the last name of James who knew that he was related to Jesse, or to discover that I had blue blood. I just wanted to find something that would be so incredibly cool.

Many adoptees and foster children have similar fantasies about their birth families while growing up. My current foster son told me that his birth mom and dad are on the show Fear Factor and have jumped out of an airplane with no parachute and landed on their feet. Wow!

Recently, an adoption reunion story has been getting a lot of attention. Sarah Culberson, with the support of her adoptive family, went looking for her birth father and found that she reigns over a village in Africa. She is a princess. Sounds fancy, but Culberson has found that the knowledge of her royalty has caused her to re-evaluate her priorities, especially since flying out to Africa in 2004, to meet her birth father and to visit the small village of Bumpe. Double wow!
