Who Can Adopt?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Who Can Adopt?
Answer:

Almost anyone can adopt. You can be single, retired, gay, lesbian, or be of any race and/or religion. (Note: Each state or country will have its own rules regarding gay and lesbian adoption.)

There is a presumption that adoptive parents need to be rich in order to adopt a child. This is simply not the case. You also don't have to own your own home, renting is just fine.

You will have to pass a background check into your criminal history. Most states and countries will be looking for violent crimes and crimes against children. This is standard when anyone is seeking to adopt.
