Take a trip to the zoo and have the children find and select an animal that is a favorite from their birth country and tell why.
Seek out pen pals from another country.
Host picnics in a park.
Swimming.
Work on scrapbooks/lifebooks. Invite someone to display a completed or updated lifebook and share what it means to them. Read about Madhu and how his lifebook helped him heal from a traumatic start in life.
Hold a dance party. Perhaps the kids could learn a traditional dance? Maybe focus on a different dance each month?
Take trips to museums of art, history, etc.
Host a food night where families bring traditional dinners. Traditional from their country, family, or culture. This activity can be done in several different ways - one group creates appetizer, while another does the main course, and another the dessert. Choose to do one country a month or have lots of different dishes from a variety of countries to sample from.
Learn phrases in different languages.
Have a story night. Make up stories to share, read traditional ones, or create a story of your own. You may also choose to invite a story teller.
Invite someone to sing silly songs with the kids. This is a LOT of fun.
Go to a concert.
Put on a carnival. You could include games from different countries.
Host Chats: Invite a therapist, an adoption specialist, or an adult adoptee to speak with your group about various adoption topics. Topics could include:
- Explaining adoption to your friends.
- Growing up in a mixed race family.
- Handling bullies.
- How to respond to common questions.
