Why does a home study seem so scary?

By Carrie Craft, About.com

Question: Why does a home study seem so scary?

Answer:

Having a social worker in your home asking you about your past can be intimidating. You may feel the need to be perfect. DON'T! This will raise red flags for the worker as we all know that there is no such thing as a perfect family. Be honest and let some warts show. What you may think of as your weakness may be turned into a strength when adopting some children, especially older children coming from the foster care system. Know that almost everyone is nervous when it comes time for a home study. It's normal. Just be yourself and remember your sense of humor. You'll need it! You're going to be a parent!
