An Adoption Poem

That Day

From Alisha, for About.com

I kept waiting for the thud of your hand at the door,
but you never came.
I kept waiting for the sound of your voice,
but it was never heard.
I kept waiting for you to be seen,
I kept waiting for the sound of your car,
it was never heard.
I kept waiting for the thud of your feet on the hardwood floor,
you never came.
I kept waiting for you to hug me,
you were never felt.
I kept waiting for the sound of the family,
you never came.

Then "that day" came.
I was taken with my brother to a family that cared,
we waited seven years, we're tired of waiting and waiting.
I feel so, so sad but that's the way it has to be.

By Alisha (Poem submitted by her adoptive mother, written by her 12-year-old daughter who she adopted at age 3.)
