What Does the Word 'Foster' Mean?

By Carrie Craft, About.com Guide

Definition:

I like the Webster's II New Riverside Dictionary's definition for the word 'foster.'

"1. To bring up: nurture. 2. To cultivate and encourage. Giving or receiving parental care though not related through blood or legal ties."

There is a lot of 'nurturing and encouraging' that goes into fostering a child and his birth family. That is one reason I totally disagreed when some State's changed our title from 'foster parents' to 'resource parents.' In my opinion, they removed the love from foster care.
