Simon, a stray cat, wonders into a home one cold Christmas Eve and meets Santa who stops to ponder what gift to leave for the child who lives there. Through this meeting Simon learns that he has much to offer, especially to the children he loves, even those who reject him and call him "Stinky".
Granting Christmas Wishes
"Knowing who was good or bad and which toys each child wanted was hard enough. Santa also wanted to know who was happy and safe, and who was lonely or afraid. For this was Santa's own Christmas wish."
Simon, who has been rejected most of his life, has the ability to look into the heart of a child and know what he or she really needs. Santa wants to do an even better job of helping the children of the world and asks Simon to "belong to him". Santa's Stray is a great story for foster and adoptive homes as it teaches the message of acceptance and belonging. An important message for children in transition to hear.

Illustrations
The illustrations are by Carlene Williams. Oil paintings on canvas, the illustrations are soft and capture the spirit of Simon. I love the picture of Simon's eyes as it seems to express that this cat really knows and understands the needs of children.
Williams has a BFA in illustration from Brigham Young University. She resides in Wichita, Kansas with her husband.

I find Santa's Stray appropriate for foster or adoptive homes as the message is clear, everyone has a purpose and a place in someone's home and heart. Everyone has a special gift to offer. There are no real strays in this world - whether they are two or four legged.
I would recommend Santa's Stray" for children ages 4-8.
