By , About.com Guide

Question: What Visas Are for Hague Convention Adoptions?

Children adopted from Hague convention countries receive either an IH-3 or IH-4 immigrant visas.

Answer: IH-3 Visa

The IH-3 visas are for children under the age of 18 and were adopted in a Hague Convention country. These children will automatically acquire U.S. citizenship upon entry into the United States with an IH-3 visa.

In these cases, the USCIS automatically sends Certificates of Citizenship without the need for more forms or fees.

IH-4 Visa

The IR-4 visas are for children from a Hague Convention country, but the adoption will be completed within the United States. IH-4 visa recipients do not automatically become U.S. citizens but will be lawful permanent residents until the adoption is full and final.
