H.R. 5283: Help Haiti Act of 2010
This bill was introduced on May 12, 2010, sponsored by Rep. Jeffrey Fortenberry(R-NE) and signed into law by President Barack Obama on December 9, 2010.
Became Public Law No:111-293
The purpose of this law is to provide an "adjustment of status for certain Haitian orphans paroled into the United States after the earthquake of January 12, 2010."
It was standard procedure of law that a Haitian adoptee and the new adoptive parents had to wait two years before they could apply for their child to be a permanent legal citizen of the United States. The new law, H.R. 5283: Help Haiti Act of 2010, allows for a Haitian adoptee, particularly those brought to the U.S. having been evacuated after the January 2010 earthquake, can apply immediately avoiding the two year wait.
