When it comes to making a school choice the decision between a public or private school really depends on your child's needs and has very little to do with your child's status as an adopted child or a former foster child. Things to look at when making a school choice.
Public vs. Private Schools
Public
Some public schools may have more of a variety in extra curricular activities, including more sporting programs.
Public schools receive more funding for special education, so may have more resources to meet special needs.
Ask your neighbors, the police department, and/or the school's resource officer if the school has a reputation for violence or behavior problems. Former foster children really need the opportunity to choose friends from a healthy peer group.
Private
Some private schools specialize in activities or interests such as a sting program. So if your child plays the violin, this may be a good fit.
Have no obligation to accommodate the special needs of a child, although some may.
Questions to Think About
- What are your child's needs?
- How is your budget?
- Will all of your kids be in the same school? Is this a pro or a con for your family?
Questions to Ask
- What is the student to teacher ratio?
- How many students attend the school? Will a large population overwhelm your shy child?
- What makes this school special? Is it their drama department, debate team, or sports program? Is it the same things that make your kid special?
Asking the right questions and figuring out what your child needs will really narrow down your options and help you make the right school choice for your child.
