By Carrie Craft, About.com

Question: What Should Birth Parents Not Expect in an Open Adoption?

As you are deciding on whether or not to place your child for adoption, one possible choice to consider is that of an open adoption. An open adoption is an adoptive family and birth family keeping in contact for the benefit of a child. Contact in an open adoption can mean different things to different families.

Answer: Keep in mind that an open adoption may not meet your expectations.

In an Open Adoption Do Not Expect

  • to be a parent to your child. This is not shared parenting or co-parenting. The adoptive parents will be the parents of your child in all ways.

  • to be guaranteed continual contact. There may be a time with the adoptive parents will not allow you to have contact with the child.

  • to be cured of all grief and loss feelings through an open adoption. The pain and loss will still be present and there will need to be a time of healing that needs to occur.
