Definition: Adoption registries are databases that hold registering adoptee and registering birth family information, such as date of birth, state where adoption took place, name, etc. When the registry determines that a match in information occurs, both parties are notified. An adoption registry only works when both parties of an adoption - adoptee, birth mom, birth father, or other kin - registers. A match can not be made if the other half has not registered. This is why these adoption registries are also called mutual consent registries. Many register even if they are not interested in a reunion because it is a way for vital information to be exchanged - such as medical information and family history.
