According to the U.S. Department of State's Web site 17,438 visas were issued to orphans entering the United States in 2008 from the top 20 countries listed below. Compare this to the 2007, adoption statistics. The number of international adoptions dropped between 2007 and 2008.

These statistics work within the U.S. Government fiscal year, which begins on October 1 and ends on September 30.
