According to the U.S. Department of State's Web site 9,319 visas were issued to orphans entering the United States in 2011 from the top 20 countries listed below. Compare this to the 2009 and 2010, adoption statistics of 11,058 and 12,744 visas. The number of international adoptions dropped between 2008 and 2009 by 27% and has continued to drop over the past seven years.

These statistics work within the U.S. Government fiscal year, which begins on October 1 and ends on September 30.
