On the third day of Christmas Preparations, my true love gave to me:
Three snow days,
Two calling workers
and a well planned respite weekend.

Remember when you were a kid and just loved snow days? I remember my mother dreading them, and now as a busy parent, I completely understand. The key is to keep the kids busy on snow days. This gives us some time to check our own naughty and nice lists and get ready for Christmas. Here are a few snow day ideas:

  • Let the kids watch Frosty the Snowman and then send them outside to create a bit of Christmas magic of their own. It's amazing how many children today don't know Frosty or even Rudolph. Be sure that they are well supervised, so enlist a neighborhood teen (one old enough to babysit according to your foster home's regulations). Then spend time wrapping gifts.

  • Bake cookies together and prepare some plates to deliver on Christmas Eve. Let the kids eat a few too.

  • Decorate the Christmas Tree or set out other holiday decorations. This gives you the opportunity to discuss the holidays with foster children as many do not understand what Christmas is all about.
