Definition:

A mandatory reporter is someone who by State law has to report suspected cases of child abuse or neglect. All States, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands have such laws in place.

Those designated to being mandatory reporters may include(as each State is different and laws change):
  • Social workers
  • Teachers and other school personnel
  • Physicians and other health-care workers
  • Dentists
  • Mental health professionals
  • Child care providers
  • Medical examiners or coroners
  • Law enforcement officers
  • Foster parents

If you are a mandatory reporter, learn more about how to make a report of child abuse. It's also important to know how to handle your own reactions when a child discloses abuse and neglect.
