How To Create a Simple Square Adoption Announcement

When we were adopting our sons I looked everywhere for an adoption announcement to mail out to family and friends. All I could find was announcements that were clearly for internationally adopted children and/or babies. Adopting teen boys and sending out an announcement with bouncing teddy bears just didn't seem to work, so I chose to create my own. I wanted to give other adoptive parents more options so I recently asked my sister, Chrissy Dolezal, to create a few more adoption announcements.

Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 20 minutes
Here's How:
  1. Glue the patterned piece of paper to the center of the largest solid piece of paper.

  2. Add the four eyelets to the four corners of the patterned piece of paper going through both the solid bottom piece as well as the patterned centered piece.

  3. Line the ribbon up across the lower third of the card. Glue the ribbon edges onto the back of the card.

  4. Using a computer program of your choice, type up the desired announcement in the center of a 4" x 4" square. The example shown includes a thin, double border.

    Example in the photo reads:

      damon michael

      born on
      december 18, 2001

      joined our family on
      march 28, 2006

      proud parents
      mike and cindy

  5. Place vellum into the printer and hit print. If you move fast enough, you can add embossing powder onto the freshly printed vellum, shake off the excess, and use an embossing heat gun to heat the powder. You have to move fast so that the powder sticks to the wet ink from the printer. This may or may not work.

When cutting the vellum piece remember to leave a 1/2" on the top for gluing purposes.

  6. Glue the vellum piece onto the smaller, solid piece of contrasting paper by folding the 1/2" piece of the vellum over the top of the solid piece of paper and gluing on the back. It is better to glue vellum on the back side where it is unseen as glue will show through vellum. Yes, the vellum will only be glued on one end, this is why it is better to glue it on the top, other wise it will flap open.

  7. Glue the third contrasting colored piece with the now attached vellum to the center of the patterned paper.

  8. A beautiful adoption announcement ready to mail to family and friends.

What You Need:
  • 6" x 6" piece of base color
  • 5" x 5" piece of patterned paper
  • 4" x 4" piece of complimentary color
  • 4 eyelets
  • 4" x 4 1/2" piece of vellum
  • 6 1/2" ribbon
