The Star is a story about a young child named "Kit" who was placed in foster care. The story follows Kit as she enters her new foster home and deals with a variety of emotions and questions. During the first night in the foster home, Kit looked into the sky and noticed a bright star. The star speaks to Kit and offers comfort and explains that Kit is not alone in his/her feelings and emotions. The star continues to be a comfort to Kit as he/she goes along his/her foster care journey.

Questions & Activities for The Star

The Star is accompanied by a handbook for foster parents entitled, Questions & Activities for The Star. The handbook follows The Star page by page offering "Foster Facts", "Ideas for Questions", and "Suggested Activities". All of the material is geared to follow the story and relate the child's experience to that of Kit's.

Guidelines for reading The Star is also outlined in the handbook. These guidelines include: referring to Kit as "he" or "she" to match the sex of your foster child, reading the story at different times of the day, and being aware of what the child says Kit is feeling may be actually what the child is feeling.

The Illustrations in The Star

The Star features beautiful watercolor pictures of Kit's foster care experience from leaving her birth mother's home to being placed in foster care. Kit's emotions and those of other foster children are artfully created and will maintain the attention of most children.
