Questions & Activities for The Star
The Star is accompanied by a handbook for foster parents entitled, Questions & Activities for The Star. The handbook follows The Star page by page offering "Foster Facts", "Ideas for Questions", and "Suggested Activities". All of the material is geared to follow the story and relate the child's experience to that of Kit's.Guidelines for reading The Star is also outlined in the handbook. These guidelines include: referring to Kit as "he" or "she" to match the sex of your foster child, reading the story at different times of the day, and being aware of what the child says Kit is feeling may be actually what the child is feeling.
The Illustrations in The Star
The Star features beautiful watercolor pictures of Kit's foster care experience from leaving her birth mother's home to being placed in foster care. Kit's emotions and those of other foster children are artfully created and will maintain the attention of most children.
About the Author of The Star
Cynthia Miller Lovell is a pediatric nurse practitioner. She has also been a foster mother to preschool children. She has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Kalamazoo College and a master's degree in pediatric nursing from Yale University.
About the Illustrator of The Star
Angie J. Przystas earned an associate's degree in art from Kellogg Community College. She is currently studying computer graphics and design.
More Information About The Star
Finding books appropriate for younger children is sometimes difficult. The Star is an excellent resource for foster parents and other care givers of children in younger foster care.
The Star is recommended for children ages 4-8.
