Many child referrals list medical problems. Most of the listed issues are treatable, correctable and/or not a big deal. Get the facts on the diagnosis or mentioned complications that are a part of a child referral.
- Research any medical issue brought up in the referral. Search the internet and visit your local library.
- Ask your family doctor to review the medical information that was sent to you. What is he/she's opinion of the condition? What treatments can he/she offer? Can he/she make a referral to another doctor? Is there a doctor or hospital nearby who can treat the condition? Are you willing to travel for treatment?
- Send the medical information off to reputable doctors for review. Search the internet for doctors with experience reviewing international child referrals.
- Call your insurance to see if the condition and treatment will be covered by your plan. Ask if the medicine, hospital stay, needed equipment and other expenses will be covered. You will not want any financial surprises. This will only cause more stress to your family and marriage.
- Talk with parents who are parenting a child with this medical condition. Seek out support groups and ask if you can sit in. If you choose to parent this child you may welcome the comfort of people who know what you and your family are going through.
Based on what you discover - what happens if you decide to say "no"?
